Problem

Since 1935 EPB has provided electric power to the people of the greater Chattanooga area. In 2009, EPB introduced a new suite of services using the area’s only 100% fiber optic network allowing customers to purchase Fi-Speed Internet, Fi TV, and Fi Phone. The introduction of these services resulted in the need for new and updated web properties with a visual style that fit the brand guidelines.

Solution

Although the project was fairly open-ended, my team at Medium focused on a few particular goals: restructure the information architecture to incorporate new services, create a distinction between business and residential services, incorporate several third-party services, allow people to sign-up for new services online and create a richer visual experience. New features were also implemented to create a more transparent flow of information from EPB to the customer, a goal set by the client. These features included, among others, an outage map that displayed, in real-time, the number of outages in each city district and an inquiry wizard that allowed customers to receive the answers to any question about EPB within a few simple steps.

Results

In November of 2009, EPB was awarded a federal stimulus grant in the amount of $111 million from the Department of Energy for expediting the build and implementation of the Smart Grid.
